Hello, Little One

I wrote this song in the weeks after September 11, 2001.  We learned were going to have our third child on September 10.  My first thought when I learned of the terrorist attacks was, "What a time to bring a child into the world!"   As I have talk with other new parents, I've found that they felt the same way.

HELLO LITTLE ONE
By Pepper Choplin

Hello little one, I know you’re there.
You're all safe and warm in your mother’s care.
Stay right where you are, I’ve got so much to do
‘Til I get this world all ready for you.

Chorus:
I’ve gotta fill the world with peace,
I gotta try to stop the war.
I’ve got to teach them how to love and not hate anymore.
It’s a mighty big job, but it’s a job I’ve gotta do.
I’ve got to fix this world until it's ready for you.

We were so excited on that September day
When we first learned you were there and you were on your way.
But when I saw those buildings crumble and fall to the ground,
I whispered, “Little one,  please don’t come now.
Oh please don’t come now.”

(Chorus)

I see that you are growing and it’s time to be born
And I really can’t ask you to wait anymore.
I tried to fix the whole world, but the best I could do
Is a home full of love that’s ready for you.
Oh, now we’re ready for you,
Oh little one, now please come soon.

Chorus:
Together we’ll fill the world with peace
And we’ll try to stop the war.
And we’ll teach them how to love and not hate anymore.
It’s a mighty big job,
Gonna need a whole lot of help from you.
We’ve got to fix this world,
Come, little girl.
We’ve got to fix this world,
Now please come soon.
